Various tools for sowing |
Nov. 9/2024 I made a jig to use when sowing small seeds such as onions and shishito peppers in home gardens. There are three types of jigs: the first is a jig to make a depression for sowing the seeds, the second is a toothpick to drop the seeds into, and the third is a shoot to put the seeds in.Drawing |
.First, I made a jig for making seed holes. I used a branch of a Chinese quince tree cut down in my garden. It had been 26 years since it was planted, but it had been cut down from the base because insects had gotten into it. |
.Cut the branches to a length of about 200 mm. |
.Grab it with a three-jaw chuck on a wood lathe and turn one side to 23mm in diameter. |
.Flip the workpiece over, grab it, turn it in the same way, and then turning the tip at a 90-degree angle. |
.Also, flip the workpiece over and turning the tip 120 degrees. |
.The next step was to make a jig to remove the seeds, and I used bamboo as the material (top of the photo). |
.The workpiece is gripped with a three-jaw chuck, the head of which is pressed against the rotation center, and the tip is turned with a tapered diameter of 4 mm so that it is sharp. |
.The finished bamboo stick. It's like the boss of toothpicks. |
.The bamboo part is thin, with a diameter of only 4 mm, so I decided to make the handle larger. I used a maple branch from my garden. |
.Grasp the workpiece with a three-jaw chuck and turn half of the workpiece to a diameter of 7mm. |
.The workpiece is inverted and chucked. |
.Turning while tapering. |
.Drill 4mm. |
.Insert the bamboo stick and it's done. |
.The final step is to make a jig (chute) to put the seeds in and sow them. The material used is scraps of cypress. |
.Cut a 90 degree V groove with a router. |
.A 10mm deep V-groove is completed. |
.Cut the rounded end of the groove into a square shape with a carving knife. |
.Sanding the edges to R10. |
.Use the all-purpose adhesive Cemedine Super X2 to glue the aluminum angle and handle, and the piece is complete. |
The completed jigs. They will get wet, so they were finished with a urethane paint. |
