Mosquito Lagoon report.
Fishing has been excellent these last few weeks only interrupted by recent west winds. Before the winds came up out of the west the lagoon was showing her good side with plenty of tailing reds and visible schools in the early A.M. Getting out to your favorite fishing spot a ? hour before sunrise will pretty much guarantee a view of redfish schooled and tailing. For a few lucky charters we found schools of reds that werenft skittish and could be fished for hours. Other days a slow cautious approach and long cast in the front of the fish was the way to hook up.
On those days when the reds are moving and the angler needs to be still, circle hooks have been helping to produce good catches. A 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook whether a cheaper Mustad or expensive Daiichi, it doesnft seem to matter, has accounted for the most fish. Circle hooks almost always ensure a good hookup in the corner of the reds mouth and gut hooked fish are reduced dramatically.
Last week during those calm, windless mornings Redfish were easy to sight cast and fly fishermen had their best days so far this summer with chartreuse clousers and gold spoons.
The west winds were perfect for the nice ground swell we had the last few days, making a great alternative to the blown out lagoon. It was a reunion of sorts seeing some of the old gang that surfed in the 60fs. A few tarpon were rolling on the outside break and with the light and variable winds predicted wefll probably jump a few this week.
Have a great week, get out and fish!

Mosquito Lagoon to Ponce Inlet Report.
Ponce Inlet. Small whiting are plentiful along the beaches. The river is holding jacks, ladyfish and mangrove snapper. Tarpon are along the beach, in the inlet and river. If the heat gets to you try night fishing for trout in the river near well lit docks, always fun. For offshore sportfishing information call Capt. John Krall of the Southwind @ 904-423-9260.
Mosquito Lagoon. A late strong low pressure system brought clouds and a steady west wind for a couple of days recently, disrupting a long run of perfect sight casting conditions all through June. During late June the low water level in the lagoon concentrated the redfish schools making them an easy target.
Careful releasing of redfish in that shallow, warmer and less oxygenated water is important, some fish donft take the stress too well.
This week the lagoon got a welcome rise in the water level and wefve been finding plenty of redfish grazing new territory in skinny water. Yesterday, although the water is high we found our best fishing in one of the deeper areas of the flats. A large school of reds parked itself in about 30 inches of water, their slight surface movements gave them away and they inhaled large shrimp (dead and alive), live pinfish, finger mullet and suspending jerk baits (Capt. Mikes).
The flats are full of little bait stealers and I wouldnft recommend the shrimp unless your definitely on redfish.
Wefve been mostly fishing the larger slot sized redfish in the 25 to 27 inch range in 1 foot of water and the bigger 40+ inch reds in 2 to 4 foot water just off the flats.
Wefre now in the thick of summer, if you havenft noticed, and the warm, calm, sultry mornings are perfect for spotting tailing reds.
Have a great week, get out and fish!

May 28/2000Anabuki River
I went fishing with five friends.
There is the "Anabuki River" upper stream and is called Koyadaira.
Our target is a char(iwana).
Mr.Hama did using the bait, Mr.Katayama did Flyfishing and Mr.Muguruma did TENKARAfishing with me.
The result wasn't good. It is nine all together in all the members.
Then, we could not fish a char(iwana).
It is regrettable truly.
The dam is continuing the neighborhood of the fishing place.
It thinks that I am wished not to break nature.
The photograph is the place where Mr.Hama caught a char(iwana) last time.
Will be better to practice mountaineering than for the fishing.
May 06/2000Anabuki River
It is a report from Mr.Hama.
Manabe-san hello!
Today, it went to Anabuki river.
Then, I accidentally discovered the place which the char(iwana) can fish.
There is 2 sections which were divided at the dam.
The char(iwana) could be fished in 2 sections.
Don't you go to fish a char(iwana) with me?
I guide.
It attaches the photograph of the catch today.
The char(iwana) is 34 cm and has the characteristic of the trout.
from Hama.
---------------------------------------------------------
The 34 cm char is wonderful. but, I think that it is not a char(iwana) and that it is amego.

Kamikatsu River.
Today is a holiday in May Day.
Kamikatsu River is near my house.
Big amego lives there.
I fished 27 cm amego.
In tokushima, it is possible to fish seldom it.
April 08/2000
Takeyashiki River.
Takeyasiki river is famous that it is possible to fish crude Amego.
There is in the 140 km position from my house.
I began and challenged.
I fished 22 in Tenkara [fly of the Japanese formula].
It was lovely terribly.
March 19/2000
The report from Hama chan.
But I intended to go to Anabuki river.
It changed a plan and it went to mina river in the Kitou village.
It became fishing in its raining softly.
As for the caught fish, Mr. Muguruma was 15 and I was to do 16 being.
I recorded the past maximum. There are a lot of fish.
When fishing 100 if being Manabe-san, I think.

Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon Fish Report.
Mosquito Lagoon. The fishing on the flats, around the islands and drop-offs has been excellent.
The incredible weather we had for the last two weeks along with the good populations of Trout and Redfish showing a willingness to eat have made for some enjoyable fishing trips.
The first really unfishable day this year showed up today with gusts of wind to 25+, by Sunday though we ought to be back to calm, pretty warm, sunny fishing conditions.
Seatrout have been jumping on live shrimpand the Redfish have been taking cut and whole mullet, fresh shrimp(preferably live), and jigs(weighted and unweighted).
Keep several rods rigged differently ready to go. I keep one rod rigged with a 3/0 Lazer Kahle hook with either a shrimp or mullet hooked and ready, another rigged with plastic, usually a Capt.
Mikes Flats Candy II in rootbeer or light tan with gold sparkles. The Flats Candy comes with a Gamakatsu hook and is super sharp! The third rod has a my trusty gold spoon on it and business end needs to be sharpened daily on that.
Flyfishing has been good. The main prerequisite for Reds on fly is the ability to get your shot off with minimal amount of motion and false casting. Practice, practice, practice. It sure pays off!
Ponce Inlet. The weather conditions have also been good for the inlet anglers. Good catches of Reds, Drum, Blues, Sheephead and some Flounder have been reported.
Try the entrance to Spruce Creek and the shoreline across from Swoope Power plant if the inlet is too rough this weekend. The back-country creeks and bays are also giving up there share of fish. Fish the oyster bars and drop-offs in those areas.
Have a good week, get out and fish!
